Beat Licensing: What is it?

Beat licensing, or beat leasing, is the payment for the authorization to use a beat with the terms set forth by the licensor (producer). The phrase “beats to buy” may appear, but it refers to purchasing a beat license. This license permits the usage of a beat for a predetermined number of sales/streams or a predetermined period (referred to in legalese as the “term”). The licensed beats expire when certain restrictions are met, and a new license must be acquired to continue using the beat. Non-exclusive and exclusive licenses are the two primary license categories. Most producers’ beat stores provide various tiers of non-exclusive licenses that you can choose from.

Basic Beat Licensing (Non-exclusive)

A “basic license” allows for the artist’s lawful use of the beat license agreement along with 200000 video streams without stem files. A new song is referred to as a derivative work once you have recorded your vocals to the beat that was licensed to you. When you create a new song, all the words are protected by copyright. The copyright to the beat is still owned by the producer. It can be continued to be sold to other artists unless an exclusive license is purchased.

Premium Beat Licensing (Non-exclusive)

A “premium license” is $70 with 500000 video streams and tracked-out stem files. Other artists can buy a license to use the beat after the premium license has been purchased without an exclusive beat license. The producer, however, continues to have copyright ownership of the beat, and previous non-exclusive license holders may still use it under the conditions of their prior agreement.

Unlimited Licensing (Non-exclusive)

The “unlimited license” is $180 and includes unlimited video streams and tracked-out stem files. The premium license is the best (affordable) option to monetize and not have limitations on the new song you create. Without an exclusive license agreement, other artists can purchase a non-exclusive beat license to use the beat. The beat’s copyright remains with the producer. Any previous non-exclusive license holders may still use it if they abide by the terms of their former arrangement.

What suits you the best?

Exclusive licenses are your best option if you want to take your music seriously and not have any other artist use the same beat. However, suppose you’re an upcoming young musician working on your mixtape or debut album. In that case, spending that much money on exclusive rights doesn’t make sense (because they cost a lot more!). You will still be able to establish a fan base and spread the word about your music using a non-exclusive beat license agreement
